Elliott Fastrack was commissioned by Mirfield Grammar School to design and build a new state of the art three storey sixth form centre covering 1100m2. The three storey building includes IT suites, cafe, dining area, social areas, offices and an 8 person 630kg hydraulic lift.
The building is a striking structure of two parts with the front of the building consisting of four projecting bays each with brise soleil. The solar shading system consisted of horizontal fins offering a high level of sun shading and creating an aesthetically pleasing system that adds a new and powerful dynamic to the overall architecture.
The rear of the building is signalled by a curved roof structure set against architectural blockwork and contrasting brickwork with a brise soleil canopy providing solar shading.
The project has been chosen to be showcased in the official RIBA Education Review 2009, which is a publication that appraises some of the best education projects over the year.
Sustainable and low energy measures were incorporated into the building through solar glazing, high efficiency condensing boilers, ventilation via common ducted heat recovery units combining air conditioning, PIR activated lighting and clerestorey windows controlled by motor activators and brise soleil.
The building structure was a Hybrid steel and timber frame construction using Elliott Fastrack's timber wall panel system. The building was completed in May 2008.
