Elliott Fastrack was commissioned by Mace and Hertfordshire County Council, as part of a five year framework agreement, to design and build a new multi-million-pound maths and music building at Roundwood Park School in Harpenden.
After completion of the initial scheme design, the design development and detailed specification were taken over by Elliott Fastrack in-house design team, the design was carried out with environmental sustainability as a core consideration and the chosen form of construction is inherently energy efficient.
The building construction is a 'Hybrid System' combining steel frame with cast in-situ concrete floors with Elliott Fastrack timber panel external wall system, clad in coloured render and cedar on the front elevation. The building is ventilated using heat recovery units and photovoltaic (PV) panels were installed on the south elevation and solar collectors assist the electrical supply with sun cooled glazing being utilised on south facing elevations.
One of the main challenges the team faced was a very rapid construction phase of thirty two weeks, which included the demolition of the existing modular classrooms. Elliott Fastrack construction techniques were ideally suited to this project primarily for their sustainability credentials and speed of construction.
The contemporary design of the new maths and music building is defined by the distinctive roof structure and irregular shaped windows which combined with the bright internal spaces enhances the buildings performance.
The Head of Roundwood Park, Nick Daymond, was “immensely proud of the finished school which was developed in a good partnership spirit, which was a testament to the entire team”.
Elliott Fastrack has been delivering design and build solutions to the education sector for over 45 years with over 540 new build projects successfully delivered to date.
